WASHINGTON STATE: GAY RIGHTS BILL PASSES SENATE!!!
VICTORY FOR HB 2661!!! The Washington state Senate voted 25-23 Friday to pass an LGBT civil rights bill that ends a 30 year struggle by gays.
The legislation adds "sexual orientation" to a state law that already bans discrimination based on race, gender, age, disability, religion and marital status.
The measure passed the House last week and now moves to Gov. Chris Gregoire for signing. Gov. Gregoire has pledged to sign the bill into law.
"It's a moment of joy," Rep. Ed Murray (D-Seattle), the bills sponsor said after the Senate vote. Murray has been pushing for a decade to get the legislation passed.
This is huge for Washington and a good thing for us here in Oregon. Hopefully it will send a message to Salem for the next Legislative Session in '07.
This legislation is a farce.
It actually contains two amendments. One, that it does not promote homosexuality - or any other lifestyle, and another, that it does not alter the state constitution regarding marriage
The Washington gay bill of rights offers us a second class civil rights status. No other group has had conditions tacked on to their legislation in order to pacify the right wing.
We are better served to fight for equality rather than some semblance of it.
"It's a moment of joy...", gee thanks, and can you show me to our new and improved homosexual drinking fountain?
