As I watched the Senate Pass SB1000...

I am sitting here in the Meeting Room at the Oregon State Capitol. Today, Senate Bill 1000 passed by a margin of 19 to 10 with Senator Nelson being absent for the vote.

After nearly 3 hours of testimony from all Senators, both pro and con. The testimony was absolutely amazing.

Starting off the testimony was Senate Majority Leader Kate Brown whom we owe so many thanks to. Thank you to Senator Westlund, Bates, Ringo, Morse, Deckert only to name a few. Their speeches were impassioned and true. They spoke out. They spoke out to their fellow Senators, colleagues, and the over 125 supporters of the bill that were watching this entire historical event unfold. I want to thank the amazing staff of Basic Rights Oregon who worked 12 hour days to help get this legislation passed.

I will never forget this day. It is a day that will be with me for the rest of my life.

So thank you Senator Brown. You truly pulled through. You make us proud. Thank you to all involved in helping get SB1000 passed today.

Now the real battle begins. Let take it to the House!

More to come...

I think your euphoria has blinded you to reality. This will never get a hearing in the House and you fellow citizens don't want it.

This was entirely symbolic. And not a very impressive symbol. 19 people agree with you. That's it.

But that is a catchy slogan you have now.

"all the gay you can take in a day"

Did you make that up? Maybe you could come up with something for me...

Oh Daniel. Politics are a dirty, dirty game. We have a few options in the House of which I will not discuss on here. Nothing is ever certain - though I do have great hope.

Yes you are right, it is symbolic. Never had I been so moved by the testimony of Christian leaders in the Senate, using their own faith as an argument to pass SB1000. Truly powerful.

19 people? Yes, 19 of the 29. That's a pretty large margin. Larger of a margin than the Measure 36 results. All polls, even Riley Research (always conservative) show that an overwhelming majority of Oregonians support civil unions. Close to 70% in fact. Over 80% favor anti-discrimination legislation as well.

As far as "All the Gay You Can Take in a Day" - yes came up with that. I liked what you had on your blog... something like "If my head was naturally bald I would save a lot on razors". I think it was a great, yet subtle way of letting people know that you are a skinhead.

Love,
Bryan H. :)

Congrats Bryan! I know you personally put a lot of your time into this. It's an important step in the process, and I know you aren't playing pollyanna about the chances for the bill to make it into law with any immediacy.

Thanks Torrid. We all should be happy. Simply amazing. The experience in the Senate gallery - everything really. It was a well deserved victory for civil rights. Now onto the House!
