SUPREME COURT SAYS 'NO' TO SAME SEX MARRIAGES

The Oregon Supreme Court on Thursday invalidated the marriages of nearly 3000 same-sex couples and refused to decide whether gays and lesbians should have the same rights and benefits as married couples.

The court said while the county can question the constitutionality of laws governing marriage, they are a matter of statewide concern so the county had no authority to issue licenses to gay couples.

The decision was a victory for social conservatives who backed Measure 36, the 2004 initiative that defined marriage as being between one man and one woman.

Gay rights advocates can file a new lawsuit to seek to obtain equal benefits, but the process could take several years.

My partner and I were the ones who spearheaded the gay marriage march over a year ago in Seattle. We knew at that time there would be a lot more to come. We also knew that as our community was making such strides twards equality, We knew in our hearts to be prepared for a backlash almost bigger than the strides we were making. This only goes to show that we need to keep our heads up and move forward no matter how many times they (the conservative party) try to push us down. The more we fight for our rights the more they will fight back, but over time more and more people will start to see that we are not asking for earthshattering changes, we are only asking to be treated equally to our (straight) neighbor. We do deserve the right to marry, we pay taxes like they do, we have jobs like they do, we love like they do, we have families like they do, we bleed like they do, and we hurt like they do. The sooner "they" realise this the better it will be for all of us.
