Oregon Representative Dennis Richardson Compares Virginia Tech Tragedy to Passage of Gay Rights Bills

In a newsletter to his constituents, Oregon State Rep. Dennis Richardson (R - Central Point) made a statement comparing the horrific events at Virginia Tech to the Oregon House passing Senate Bill 2 (Anti-Discrimination) and House Bill 2007 (Domestic Partnerships).

This is surprisingly low--even for Rep. Richardson.

Here are his statements:

This past week has been like no other. On Monday the world witnessed the tragedy at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia. On Tuesday Oregon witnessed the passage of Domestic Benefits for same-sex couples (HB 2007) and Civil Rights based on sexual orientation. I will address each of these issues below and end will a postscript on last week’s Rachel story.

If that quote makes you feel the same way it made me feel, here is his office phone number in Salem: 503-986-1404 and his email rep.dennisrichardson@state.or.us.

Rep. Richardson owes Oregonians an apology.

This is what I wrote to him:

Dear Representative Richardson,

Your made the statement that "This past week has been like no other. On Monday the world witnessed the tragedy at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia. On Tuesday Oregon witnessed the passage of Domestic Benefits for same-sex couples (HB 2007) and Civil Rights based on sexual orientation."

Your words were unquestionably offensive. Not only do you insinuate that equal protections for all of your constituents is a tragedy akin to mass murder, but you diminish those who died and those who lost loved ones in the Virginia tech tragedy.

This is a reprehensible comparison and Oregonians deserve an apology from you.

My favorite part of his newsletter is this line: "When it comes to political strategy and maneuvering, the GLBT activists have certainly been successful in moving forward their political agenda."

I wrote to Rep Richardson saying that I'm shocked and disgusted and that I hope I see an America in my lifetime that has shoved people like him to the fringe just like those who supported segregation in the past (I also couldn't resist saying that I think he has nothing to do with love or Jesus Christ).
He wrote me back! He said that Basic Rights Oregon is trying to slander him by placing his remarks out of context! He sent me a link to his newsletter, which I read, and discovered two things: 1) He was DEFINITELY comparing the Virginia Tech Shootings with the passage of Senate Bill 2 [the heading was "A Tragic Week", and then the quote mentioned in the main post] 2) The whole thing was worded just so that he could claim he wasn't EXACTLY comparing them... just talking about them both together under the heading "A Tragic Week". Well, to me, of course, that DOES constitute a comparison, and I wrote him back again and told him so.
I somehow doubt he's going to respond, but if he does, I'll post it here.
