Hundreds of Couples Line Up Around Oregon

oregon domestic partnershipThis morning marked the first day that Oregon's Domestic Partnership law was officially back on the books after Friday's ruling in an Oregon federal court.

Hundreds of couples lined up at county offices across the state to officially get registered as Domestic Partners (congrats to all of you!). In Portland, some arrived at the Multnomah County Building near the east end of the Hawthorne Bridge as early as 4 a.m. to get in line for the building's 8 a.m. opening.

We'll bring you more pictures throughout the day.

Just got home from being down there myself. Whew. What a great day.

Hoping to go get my declaration on Tuesday of next week, but part of me is terrified that I'll go down there and it will have been taken away again...

I hear ya Ravyn. I'm going on Friday, and it makes me nervous that I'm going to click on the news and *whammo*...

But I really do think that Mosman's ruling was strong enough to cause a major obstacle to an appeal. He didn't leave any room to rule in favor of an appeal based on law interpretation. I have a hard time trusting a Bush appointed Mormon, and I'm no law expert. But from what I understand, his ruling would have to be overturned on a matter of fact: an appellate court would have to rule that there were enought signatures and they would have to back it up, and they would have to justify stopping future DP's when there are now many DP's that already legally exist. Appellate courts do not like to do that, and are much more comfortable with an over-turn if it is based on interpreting the law.

But again- I'm not a lawyer. I just read a lot of news and blogs.

So it seems that our new DP law finally came to life after a bit of a spanking, but then with a healthy scream of victory & survival.

It is a great beginning.

Congrats Oregon! As a Texan stuck in a 'Red' state, it is so exciting to watch the celebrations from afar. = )
